EITHER AND NEITHER. Bahasa Inggris memiliki frase dan kata yang sulit dipahami pemakaiannya, tidak terkecuali pada kata either dan neither. Pemakainnya dalam percakapan sehari-hari lumanyan sering sehingga banyak dari English learners kebingungan dalam penerapannya.

EITHER as determiner/pronoun
Diambil dari definisi oxford learner` dictionary, either memiliki arti one or the other of two; it does not matter which bermakna sebuah pilihan bisa salah satu dari dua pilihan berbeda. penggunaannya bisa diterapkan seperti contoh berikut:
- You can park the car on either side of the street.
- Everyone can choose one of the books, either of them — whichever they like.
- There are two types of qualification, either is acceptable.
Tetapi Either juga bisa berarti each of two atau berarti salah satunya saja. berbeda dengan definisi diatas yang bisa mana aja; disini bermakna salah satunya saja. perhatikan contoh dibawah ini:
- The officess of either side was empty.
- There`s a door at either end of the corridor.
EITHER as adverb
Kata either juga bisa digunakan sebagai adverb; dan digunakan pada pola kalimat negative. kata either disini berfungsi menunjukkan situasi atau perasaan yang sama dengan keadaan yang disebut sebelumnya. Perhatikan contoh berikut:
- Pete can`t go and I cannot either.
- Muslims can`t eat pork and Jews cannot either.
- They do really good food at that restaurant, and it`s not really expensive either.
- I don`t like travelling and my family donot like either.
EITHER…OR…
Kata or adalah pasangan kata either, gabungan kedua kata ini memiliki sebuah pilihan dari dua hal. Perhatikan contoh berikut ini:
- Well, I think she`s either Batak or Torajanese.
- I am going to order either burger or fried chicken. I cannot decide.
- Either he could not come or he did not want to.
Bisa juga Kata either digunakan untuk menambah infomasi dukungan supaya lebih meyakinkan, perhatikan contoh
- I know a good mexican restaurant, it`s not far from here, either.
NEITHER determiner, pronoun
Kata neither ini lebih menunjukkan keadaan dimana not one nor the other of two things or people, bermakna tidak keduanya atau semuanya. Perhatikan contoh berikut:
- Neither answer is correct.
- Neither of them has/have a car.
- They produced two reports, neither of which contained any useful suggestions.
- Which do you like? Neither, They are both ugly.
NEITHER as adverb
Saat berfungsi sebagai adverb, kata neither disini memiliki makna bahwa sebuah kalimat negative sebelumnya juga serupa dengan kondisi pada kalimat berikutnya, Coba perhatikan contoh berikut supaya lebih jelas ya:
- He didn`t remember and neither did I.
- I hadn`t been to Singapore and neither had Jane.
- ” I can`t remember any letter”. “Neither can I”.
- Many choose neither to defend him nor to call on him tofurther explain.
- Some patients say currativ`s test is neither accurate or fast.
NEITHER…NOR…
Digunakan untuk menjelaskan bahwa kedua statement negative itu adalah sama sama benar. Lihat contoh untuk lebih jelas:
- I neither knew nor cared what had happened to him.
- Their house is neither big nor small.
- Neither TV nor VCD actually works.
- Neither my uncle, nor my aunt work in university.
- They speak neither Malay nor Aceh, but a curious mixture of the two.
- She neither read nor follow the current news of Coronavirus outbreak.
- Neither this Denver attorney not Gia`s garden has returned a request for comment.
- Regardless, neither O`reillys nor Ailes reached the heights of depravity that Bill Clinton blatantly did.
- Neither the PUC nor the legislature has a clear path to step in and amend the agreement in a way that protect ratepayers from IRS rulling.
